Some ladies

Here are a couple of paintings I have played around with... trying to paint women from imagination in different styles. I have lots of studies but these were meant to just be ideas for fun. One went mullins style as I started monochrome, the other plain digital roundbrush.

animation fun

These are some flour sack exercises for animation... I am getting into drawing animation and really think its the key to good character drawing. Its fun when you start to draw verbs instead of nouns. I have a long way to go... Have a look at this guy!

Watercolour, gouashe and pastel

I had a go with watercolour, Gouashe and finally fix-it pastel yesterday. This is from my inca trail experience and was one of my favorite memories of the place. I might carry this on in digital, as I dont like how much black I ended up using... Im getting used to the traditional way of things...slowly.

Plein Air scan

Here is a scan of the actual painting. I am going to get more paints soon as watercolour pans just dont give enough pigment when you are in a hurry!

Plein Air

I went Plein air painting on sunday, which is to say I sat on a rock like a lump and argued with my watercolours for an hour... without much luck. BUT, it seems to have gone into my head, because I just tried to paint the same scene from memory and it worked relatively well... such is the power of digital.

I will post my actual watercolour/guashe attempt asap. it will be funny to compare!

Baines Kloof

This was based on a photo I took in Baines Kloof in South Africa. I loved the peace in this little glen. It was such balm for the soul after London crowds!

A Nice Hot Bath

This started life as a pitch concept for work and became...something. Think my brain's a bit addled, but its ... yeah, fun anyway!

Gestures and a T-face

I have been inspired to get my figures improved... so I have been doing some gestures on a pre-printed proportion grid based on Loomis. I wanted to be forced to put things in the right place to get in the habit of it.

The face was for a competition at work to make a self portrait as a terminator to win stuff. I got a poster in the end, but was aiming for the artbook. This is the first self portrait I have done in many years. Bit messed up though...

the breech

I was listening to 'sharpe's tiger' by Bernard Cornwall and I wanted to paint the attack on the breech of Seringe Baitan.

All work and no play...

Another in my famous person studies... The embodiment of psycho. Damn he looks evil.

Speedy's and studies

Some random speed paints. Start with blobs and see what they become...

I have been listening to a history of the USA so this guy seemed a good one to study. Frederick Douglas, abolitionist during the American civil war.

Some sketches

These are some sketches for a story I have been working on for years... on and often off that is. I am beginning to explore the characters now, instead of just the world itself.

Bits and bobs

Here are a few more bits and pieces I have been busy with in the last while. Som old, some new.

This is a composite of a ton of paintings done on my Nintendo DS in 'colors' (collectingsmiles.com)
Its a great learning tool as there is no undo... and its just simple brushes and thumbnail size.

This was a study of a picture I took of my sisters man. I just loved the thoughtful look.

I figured it was about time I painted a guy in armour. Just one of those things that has to happen in digital art...

First time for everything

Wow... after a long time thinking about blogging and whether I should give it a try, I have finally decided to actually get off my butt and post something. I will try use this blog as a way of expressing some random thoughts on art, painting, drawing and I guess life too, though where the boundary lies between these i have yet to figure out.

Anyway, I am just going to post some studies and recent sketches to start with.
